Chapter Nineteen

I was hoping to run into Jase, but that never happened. Apparently, there was some fencing down on the back of the property and he was out repairing it.

Izzy, being the drama queen she was, was freaking out over the fact she packed wrong, so it took the better part of the afternoon for her to go through my closest and find something that she would wear without scowling.

Before we had left my sister's, Ari had asked if it was okay if we drove separately to keep the surprise going. I remembered Canyon pretending he had to check with someone about a horse and would meet us there when they did it to me, and wondered if he was going to pull the same trick to get Nyah there. Driving separate actually made things easier on me knowing Izzy would force them to be late with the wardrobe debauchery I knew she would make me endure. When I threatened to leave her behind, she caved and wore the first pair of jeans I had offered her and a pink plaid shirt I got for Christmas one year and never wore. My mother was the only person in the world that thought pink would look good on a red head. You may disagree, but that's my opinion. As far as boots go, I owned seven pair so she had no problems finding something to pull it all together. By the time we were ready to walk out the door, we looked at each other, smiled, and laughed. Getting ready was always the challenge at school but it made for some of the best memories.

The drive to the rodeo was a fun one. I had the top down, music blaring, and not a care in the world. The job I always wanted was still iffy but my life in that moment was better than okay.

When we pulled into the parking lot, it was like I entered a time warp. Five years had come and gone, but nothing there had changed. Izzy immediately commented on the smell, and as much as I used to be immune to it, even I gagged slightly as we passed the bull trailers. Once we were inside, it was a different story. The smell faded and the feeling of being home set in. The better part of my childhood was spent with Nyah, taking these events by storm.

"So you used to do this for fun?"

We were walking through the sale area full of tack. The smell of leather was overwhelming and I'm sure possibly bothering her too but I loved it. She was looking around, taking it all in and the wonder in her eyes was magical.

"Yeah, it was amazing. Talk about an adrenaline rush."

"I can't imagine ever doing anything like this."

The simple image of Izzy racing barrels gave me the giggles and I couldn't help but say, "Me either."

She nudged me playfully and then hit me forcing me to complain with an, "Ouch!"

I went to hit her back when she said, "Look over there.
